On July 16, 2024, the Diocese of Cyangugu joyously celebrated the blessing and inauguration of the Chapel of Saints Martha and Mary. The sacred ceremonies were led by the Most Reverend Edouard SINAYOBYE, Bishop of Cyangugu Diocese. During the Holy Mass, Bishop SINAYOBYE blessed the chapel, consecrated the altar, and blessed the tabernacle, marking a significant spiritual milestone for the community of Cyangugu Diocese
Location and significance

The Chapel of Saints Martha and Mary is located in Karambo Village, Cyangugu Cell, Rusizi District, Western Province. It stands on the grounds of the former Catholic bishop’s house, near Lake Kivu, along the road to Emeraude Hotel. Its strategic position near the General Administration office of the Diocese and several hotels underscores its importance as a spiritual haven for diocesan workers, hotel staff, visitors, and travelers.

Why Saints Martha and Mary?
During the inauguration, Bishop Edouard SINAYOBYE explained the inspiration behind dedicating the chapel to Saints Martha and Mary. The two figures from the Holy Gospel exemplify the virtues of hospitality and devotion to Jesus. Martha, busy with serving, and Mary, attentively listening at Jesus’ feet, represent the balance of work and prayer. As Jesus said, “Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:42). The Bishop invited everyone to imitate Mary, taking time to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His teachings.

A place for all
The chapel will be open to the public, offering a place for everyone to rest with Jesus, lay down their burdens, and seek private moments with Him. It is also intended to serve the many hotel workers and visitors in the area, providing them with an opportunity for true spiritual rest. Even travelers waiting for buses or motorcycles are welcome to use the chapel before continuing their journeys.
Gratitude to our benefactors

Bishop Edouard SINAYOBYE extended heartfelt thanks to the benefactors from Austria, led by Madame Traude, for their invaluable contribution to the chapel’s construction. Their prayers, fundraising efforts, and presence at the inauguration were deeply appreciated. Jutta Becker, speaking on behalf of the Austrian delegation, expressed their joy in being part of this project. She emphasized that the chapel now stands where a former post office facilitated communication between people, and it will now facilitate communication between people and God and amongst each other.
Community reflections
Mrs. Laurence MUKAYIRANGA, representing the local Christians, expressed gratitude to the Diocese of Cyangugu and its Bishop for making the chapel a public place of worship. She highlighted its role in serving visitors to Karambo village, especially those coming to swim in Lake Kivu, by reminding them of the need for prayer.
